48 Hours in Shanghai: From the Bund to the Clouds

Two perfectly paced days in China's showcase city — riverfront promenades, classical gardens, plane-tree boulevards, soup dumplings and a skyline from the future.

Shanghai is China at maximum voltage: a city where 1920s riverfront banks stare across the water at a skyline that looks beamed in from the future. It is also surprisingly easy to explore — the metro is vast, the walking is flat, and 48 hours, spent right, delivers the full spectacle. Here is the plan.

Key facts

  • Best months: autumn and spring; summers are steamy, winters damp and gray
  • Getting around: the metro is enormous and cheap; have a translation and payment app ready, as cash and foreign cards are less used
  • Visa note: China has offered transit visa-free options for many nationalities — check current official rules before booking

Day one

8:00 — The Bund at first light

Start on the Bund promenade before the crowds, when locals fly kites and practice tai chi against the Pudong skyline. The strip of grand colonial-era buildings behind you — banks and trading houses of old Shanghai — glows in the morning sun.

10:00 — Yu Garden and the old city

Walk into the old town to Yu Garden, a Ming-dynasty classical garden of rockeries, ponds and zigzag bridges. The surrounding bazaar is touristy but fun; hold out for lunch nearby.

12:30 — Soup dumplings

Eat xiaolongbao — Shanghai's signature soup dumplings — either at the famous old shops around Yu Garden or at a branch of Din Tai Fung. Bite a hole, sip the broth, then dip in black vinegar with ginger.

15:00 — The French Concession

Metro or taxi to the former French Concession and walk its plane-tree-shaded streets — a low-rise world of 1930s villas, boutiques and cafes around Wukang Road. This is Shanghai's most seductive neighborhood for aimless wandering.

19:00 — Xintiandi dinner

Dine in Xintiandi, where restored shikumen stone-gate houses hold restaurants and bars. Try drunken chicken, braised pork belly and other Shanghainese classics — the local cuisine runs sweeter and richer than most Chinese regional cooking.

21:00 — The Bund by night

Return to the Bund. The illuminated skyline across the Huangpu is one of the planet's great urban views — or see it from the water on an evening river cruise.

Day two

9:00 — Up the tower

Cross to Pudong and ascend Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building, whose observation deck ranks among the highest in the world — or choose the Oriental Pearl Tower for retro-futurist charm. Go early for clearer air and shorter lines.

11:30 — Lujiazui to Nanjing Road

Loop the elevated walkways among the skyscrapers, then ferry or metro back across the river and stroll the Nanjing Road pedestrian street toward People's Square.

14:00 — Museums or markets

Choose your afternoon: the Shanghai Museum's imperial treasures, the futuristic riverside West Bund galleries, or the lanes of Tianzifang for crafts and coffee.

18:00 — Jing'an Temple and farewell

End at Jing'an Temple, whose golden roofs sit surreally among glass towers, then close with dinner and a rooftop drink overlooking the lights you now know by name.

Tip: Set up a payment app linked to an international card before you land, and download an offline translation app — with those two phones-worth of preparation, Shanghai shifts from intimidating to effortless.
