Fishing boats at first light, a grand mosque before the heat, a long empty afternoon, and a souq that only wakes up after dark. A realistic single day in the Omani capital.

Muscat is a ribbon city strung along fifty-odd kilometres of coast, hemmed in by mountains, and it runs on a rhythm dictated by heat. A good day here front-loads the morning, surrenders the middle of the afternoon, and comes back to life after sunset. You will want a car or a run of taxis.

6:00 to 7:30 — the Corniche at first light

Start on the Muttrah Corniche while the air is still cool and the water is glass. Fishing boats come in early, and the modern fish market building on the waterfront is at its most alive before seven. Walk the sweep of the corniche past the old merchant houses with their carved balconies and let the mountains behind them turn from grey to gold.

8:00 to 10:30 — the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Visiting hours for non-Muslims are set, generally in the morning and generally not on Fridays, so this has to happen now. Cover shoulders and knees; women need a headscarf. Give it a proper ninety minutes: the main prayer hall with its huge hand-woven carpet and chandelier, then the arcaded courtyards, which are the quiet masterpiece. Confirm the current hours on the official site the night before.

11:00 to 13:00 — Old Muscat

Drive round to the old quarter for the National Museum of Oman, opened in 2016 and the clearest introduction to the country you will get. Step outside and you are looking straight at Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial palace with its blue-and-gold columns. Walk to the water and you can see the two Portuguese forts, Al Jalali and Al Mirani, on the rocks either side of the harbour.

13:00 to 15:00 — lunch and the retreat indoors

Eat Omani if you can. Look for majboos, spiced rice with slow-cooked meat, or mishkak, marinated skewers grilled over coals. Shuwa, meat cooked underground for a day or more, is a celebration dish and appears more often around Eid than on a Tuesday. Then accept that the early afternoon belongs to the sun.

15:00 to 17:00 — the Royal Opera House, or the beach

If the stage is free, the Royal Opera House Muscat runs daytime guided tours, and the carved teak interior is worth an hour of anyone air-conditioned afternoon. If you would rather be outside by then, Qurum beach is long, flat and made for walking.

17:30 to 18:30 — sunset above the bay

Head up to Riyam Park, where the oversized incense burner monument sits on the hill above Muttrah. The view down over the corniche, the port and the mountains as the light goes is the picture people come home with.

19:00 to 21:00 — Muttrah Souq

The souq is an evening place. Under the carved ceilings you will find frankincense and burners, silver, textiles and dates, and by this hour it is Omani families shopping rather than cruise groups browsing. Haggling is expected and should stay good-humoured.

21:00 to midnight — dinner, and an honest note

Dinner is late here, and the corniche is beautifully lit. But Muscat is not a nightlife city: alcohol is served mainly in hotels, and the streets are quiet well before midnight. That is a feature, not a fault.

Tip: Friday morning is the one time this plan breaks, because the mosque is closed to visitors and much of the city is at prayer. Shift the mosque to Saturday and use Friday for the coast.
