One Day in Essaouira: A 24-Hour Plan for Short Stops

Ramparts at dawn, thuya wood at midday, grilled sardines at the port and Gnaoua music after dark — how to use a single day on Morocco’s windy Atlantic coast.

Most people meet Essaouira as a day trip from Marrakech, which is a shame and also entirely workable. The medina is small, flat and walled, and one well-ordered day covers the ramparts, the souks, the port and the beach with time left for tea.

Key facts

  • The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, laid out on a grid — unusually easy to navigate by Moroccan standards.
  • The wind blows almost daily. Bring a layer even in summer.
  • Everything below is walkable. You will not need transport inside the walls.

8:00 — Rooftop breakfast

Start high. Most riads serve breakfast on the roof: msemen and khobz, apricot jam, orange juice and mint tea, with gulls overhead and the walls laid out below.

9:00 — The Skala de la Ville

Walk the sea-facing ramparts while the light is still low. The row of old bronze cannons pointing out at the Atlantic is the town’s signature view, and the fortifications are recognisable to anyone who watched a certain dragon-heavy television series filmed here. Below the walls, the woodworkers’ workshops carve fragrant thuya — the local craft, and a far better souvenir than a rug you cannot carry.

10:30 — Into the souks

Drop into the grid of lanes behind the ramparts. Spices, argan oil, silver, raffia and painted ceramics; prices are negotiable and the pressure is markedly gentler than in Marrakech. Emerge onto Place Moulay Hassan, the main square, for a coffee and a sit.

12:30 — The port

The working harbour is the best thing in Essaouira: a fleet of cobalt-blue wooden boats, nets being mended, gulls in numbers. At the grill stalls by the Skala du Port, you choose your fish from the ice and it is cooked in front of you. Agree the price by weight before anything hits the charcoal.

14:30 — The beach

Head south along the wide sweep of sand. Kitesurfers work the afternoon wind, horses and camels are walked along the shoreline, and if you keep going you reach the estuary and the sand-swallowed ruins of Borj El Baroud beyond it. Turn back before sunset.

17:00 — Tea and the light

Return to the square or a rooftop terrace for a glass of mint tea as the walls turn gold. This is the hour Essaouira is named for in every guidebook cliche, and the cliche is correct.

19:30 — Dinner and Gnaoua

Eat tagine, grilled sardines or a seafood pastilla in the medina, then find live Gnaoua music — the hypnotic, bass-heavy trance tradition that Essaouira has made its own and celebrates with a major annual festival.

Tip: If you are coming from Marrakech for the day, take the earliest coach out and the last one back. The road takes roughly three hours each way, and the difference between a 7am and a 10am departure is the entire morning on the ramparts.
