Windmills at golden hour, a morning among the ruins of Delos, and one perfect beach afternoon — how to spend two days on Greece's most glamorous island.

Mykonos has two reputations — party capital and Cycladic postcard — and the trick of a short visit is letting each have its moment. Two well-planned days deliver the whitewashed labyrinth of Chora, a sunset you'll never forget, an ancient island that stuns even museum-skeptics, and yes, one properly indulgent beach afternoon.

Key facts

  • Best months: May–June and September — high-summer crowds and prices are fierce
  • Getting around: buses and water taxis reach the beaches; Chora itself is car-free and made for walking
  • What it costs: Mykonos is among Greece's priciest islands — book beds and beach clubs ahead

Day 1 — Chora, beaches and the famous sunset

09:00 — Lose yourself in Chora. Mykonos Town's alleys were designed to confuse pirates, and they still work. Wander early, before the cruise crowds, past bougainvillea, red-domed chapels and the sculptural, much-photographed church of Panagia Paraportiani by the old port.

11:30 — Coffee on Matogianni. The town's stylish main lane is prime people-watching territory — window-shop the boutiques and settle in with a freddo.

13:00 — Beach afternoon. Pick your scene: Psarou for glossy beach clubs, Ornos for families and calm water, or Paradise and Super Paradise if the party is the point. Sunbeds at the famous clubs typically require reservations in season.

18:30 — The windmills at golden hour. The row of historic windmills at Kato Mili is the island's icon; late light turns them honey-colored and the crowds photogenic.

19:30 — Sunset in Little Venice. A few steps away, the old captains' houses hang over the water with their balconies practically in the waves. Every bar seat faces west; arrive early, order anything, and watch the sky perform.

21:30 — Dinner in the lanes. Chora's tavernas range from classic Greek to celebrity-chef territory. Reserve anywhere notable in July–August.

Day 2 — Delos, Ano Mera and a slow farewell

09:00 — Boat to Delos. The uninhabited island next door — mythic birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — was one of the ancient Aegean's great sanctuaries and trading ports. Boats make the short crossing from Mykonos most mornings in season; check schedules the day before, and bring a hat — there's no shade. The Terrace of the Lions alone justifies the trip.

14:00 — Lunch back in town, then inland to Ano Mera. The island's quieter inland village centers on the historic Panagia Tourliani Monastery, with its carved marble bell tower — and tavernas around the square that feel a world away from the coast.

17:00 — One last swim. Agios Ioannis or Ornos catch the softening afternoon light on the island's calmer side.

20:00 — Farewell dinner and a nightcap. End in Little Venice or the lanes — quietly or otherwise. This island does both.

Tip: The meltemi wind can blow hard in July and August — on windy days pick the sheltered southern beaches, and book Delos boats for the calmer morning slots.
