Johannesburg with Kids: A Day Out That Works for Everyone

A zoo, a lakeside picnic, a leafy cafe street and an easy city-square finish. How to build a family day in a city that expects you to drive.

Johannesburg is not a walk-out-of-the-hotel-and-see-what-happens city, and with children that matters. What it does have is space: enormous parks, a serious zoo, an urban forest of six million trees, and short drives between good things. Plan the hops and the day runs beautifully.

Key facts

  • Getting around: you will drive or use a ride-hailing app between every stop. Budget 15 to 30 minutes per hop.
  • Altitude and sun: the city sits at roughly 1,750m, so sunburn arrives faster than expected. Hats and sunscreen, always.
  • Best months: summer afternoons (roughly October to March) bring sharp thunderstorms around 4pm. Do outdoor things early.
  • What it costs: cards are widely accepted, but carry small notes for parking attendants.

08:30 — Breakfast in Parkhurst

Fourth Avenue in Parkhurst is a walkable strip of cafes with pavement tables, and it is one of the few places in the city where a family can amble. Eat properly here, because the next stop is long.

09:30 — Johannesburg Zoo

One of the largest zoos in the country, spread over shaded parkland with wide paths that suit strollers and scooters. Arrive at opening: the animals are active early, and the heat builds fast. Two to three hours is about right before attention frays.

12:30 — Picnic at Zoo Lake

Directly opposite, Zoo Lake is a classic Johannesburg Sunday: rowing boats, sprawling lawns, families barbecuing under the trees. Bring supplies from Parkhurst rather than hunting for lunch on the spot.

14:00 — The afternoon swap

Two good options depending on age and stamina. Younger children do well at the Montecasino Bird Gardens in Fourways, a walk-through aviary with a flight show. Older ones tend to prefer a hands-on science centre in the Newtown cultural precinct downtown; opening days there have varied, so confirm before driving in.

16:00 — Sandton wind-down

Finish at Nelson Mandela Square, where a six-metre bronze Mandela presides over an open plaza. Ice cream, a photograph nobody argues about, and shade. It is unashamedly a mall square, and after a long day that is precisely the appeal.

Weekend alternative

If your day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, swap the afternoon for a market. Johannesburg's weekend market culture is excellent, food stalls, live music, space for children to roam, though venues and days shift, so check what is running that week.

The bigger day out

With a full day and older children, drive an hour north-west to the Cradle of Humankind. The Maropeng visitor centre opens with an underground boat ride through the elements of early earth, and the nearby Sterkfontein caves have produced some of the world's most important hominin fossils. Book ahead.

Tip: Do everything outdoors before 2pm. Between the altitude, the UV and the summer storm clock, the afternoon belongs indoors, and planning for that is the difference between a good day and a mutiny.
