The Pink City rewards a camera more generously than almost anywhere in India. Eight places worth planning your light around, ranked by what they give back.

Jaipur was laid out in the eighteenth century on a grid, painted a uniform terracotta pink, and has been photogenic ever since. The difficulty is not finding a good frame — it is knowing which ones deserve your best light. Ranked, with timing notes.

Before you go

  • The old walled city is the pink part; the rest of Jaipur is an ordinary modern Indian city
  • Amber, Jaigarh and Nahargarh forts sit in the hills north of town — budget half a day
  • Many monuments are covered by a single combined ticket; check what is current at the first gate you reach

1. Hawa Mahal

The Palace of Winds is the shot everyone comes for and it still earns the top spot: five storeys of pink sandstone honeycombed with close to a thousand small latticed windows. It faces east, so morning is the only serious option — by afternoon the whole facade is in shadow.

2. Amber Fort

Golden sandstone ramparts zigzagging down a hillside to the water of Maota Lake, with the mirrored Sheesh Mahal and the painted Ganesh Pol inside. Part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan, and worth arriving for opening time before the crowds and the heat.

3. Patrika Gate

A modern gate at Jawahar Circle, painted floor to ceiling in Rajasthani motifs across a run of arches. It is not historic and does not pretend to be — it is simply one of the most colour-saturated frames in the city.

4. City Palace

The prize here is Pritam Niwas Chowk, the inner courtyard with four gates representing the seasons — the peacock gate is the famous one. Tight, ornate, endlessly detailed, and best photographed with patience rather than a wide lens.

5. Panna Meena ka Kund

A stepwell near Amber with criss-crossing flights of stairs descending in perfect symmetry. Small, geometric and unlike anything else on this list. Descending the steps is generally not permitted, so shoot from the rim.

6. Jal Mahal

A palace sitting in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, several of its storeys submerged. You cannot go in, which matters less than you would think: the view from the shore at dawn, with mist on the water, is the entire point.

7. Nahargarh Fort

The ridge fort above the city, and the reliable sunset position — the whole grid of Jaipur laid out below as the light goes orange. Go up early enough to find a spot at the wall.

8. Jantar Mantar

The eighteenth-century astronomical observatory, a UNESCO site full of enormous stone instruments including the great sundial. Hard, abstract shapes that photograph best in strong midday sun — which is convenient, because nothing else here does.

Tip: Work north to south with the sun. Hawa Mahal and Amber first thing, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar through the middle of the day, then Nahargarh for the last hour. Doubling back across Jaipur’s traffic will cost you more light than any lens can recover.
