Penang’s heritage core is small enough to cross on foot and dense enough to fill a week. A time-blocked route through clan houses, temples, murals and the hawker stalls that justify the whole trip.

George Town rewards the short visit better than almost any city in Southeast Asia, because the UNESCO-listed core is barely two kilometres across and nearly everything worth seeing sits inside it. The constraint is not distance. It is heat, and it is appetite.

07:30 – Kopi and kaya toast

Start the way the city does, in an old coffee shop: charcoal-toasted bread with coconut-egg jam, soft-boiled eggs with white pepper and soy, and kopi strong enough to correct a bad night. The morning air is the coolest you will get, so eat quickly and start walking.

08:30 – Clan houses and the Street of Harmony

Khoo Kongsi is the set piece: a Hokkien clan temple wrapped in carved granite and gilded woodwork, sunk into its own courtyard square off a quiet lane. From there, walk the road known as the Street of Harmony, where a mosque, a Chinese temple, a South Indian Hindu temple and an Anglican church stand within a few hundred metres of each other — a fair summary of what Penang has always been.

10:30 – Murals, jetties, mansions

The Ernest Zacharevic wall paintings scattered through the old town, installed in 2012, remain the city's most photographed feature; Kids on Bicycle is the one everyone hunts. Work your way east to the Chew Jetty, a wooden clan settlement built on stilts over the water, then loop back for the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, the indigo-blue courtyard house whose restoration helped set the standard for the whole city.

12:30 – Lunch, then hide from the sun

Nasi kandar or Hokkien mee, then an hour indoors. The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is the best air-conditioned hour available: a Straits Chinese merchant house crammed with lacquer, tile and beadwork.

15:30 – Fort and waterfront

Fort Cornwallis, built by the East India Company in the 1780s at the point where Francis Light landed, marks the origin of the city. The esplanade beside it catches the sea breeze, and the colonial administrative buildings around it make a pleasant slow loop as the light softens.

18:00 – Little India

Go at dusk, when the music gets louder and the flower garlands come out. Sweets, banana-leaf meals and a completely different sensory register from the morning's Hokkien lanes.

19:30 – The hawker hour

This is why you came. Char kway teow cooked over a fierce flame, assam laksa sharp with tamarind and mackerel, char koay kak, and cendol with shaved ice and palm sugar to finish. Street stalls in the old town are excellent; Gurney Drive, a short ride away, gathers the largest concentration in one place. Most stalls take cash only, and many close one day a week.

Tip: Build the day anticlockwise around the heat — outdoor sights before 11am and after 4pm, mansions and museums in between. A folding umbrella doubles as sun cover and is the single most useful thing you can carry here.
