Crete is usually sold on beaches, but this is the island where European civilization arguably began. The Minoans were building palaces here some four thousand years ago, and every conqueror since — Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman — left layers you can still walk through. Here is the cultural shortlist that does the island justice.
Key facts
- Crete is Greece's largest island; Heraklion and Chania are the two main cultural hubs, around two hours apart by road
- The Minoan civilization flourished here in the Bronze Age, roughly 2000–1400 BC
- Archaeological sites are exposed and hot in summer — go early and carry water
- Combined tickets are often available for Knossos and the Heraklion museum; check official sources
1. The Palace of Knossos
The legendary seat of King Minos and the labyrinth of the Minotaur myth, just outside Heraklion. Its partly reconstructed frescoes and grand staircases divide archaeologists, but standing in a palace complex from Europe's first great civilization remains a genuine thrill. Arrive at opening time to beat both coaches and heat.
