Few cities sit inside scenery the way Vancouver does. Mountains rise straight from the harbor, ferries thread between forested islands, and one of the world's great scenic drives starts at the city's edge. The hard part is choosing — so here is the ranking.
Key facts
- Car-free options: Bowen Island, Victoria and Deep Cove are all reachable by ferry and/or public transport
- Best months: May to October for mountains and water; ski season typically runs winter through spring at Whistler
- Ferries: BC Ferries connects the mainland to Vancouver Island and the smaller Gulf Islands; check schedules ahead in summer
1. Whistler via the Sea-to-Sky Highway
The drive alone justifies the day: around two hours north along Howe Sound, with fjord, forest and granite walls the whole way. Whistler itself — co-host of the 2010 Winter Olympics — delivers year-round: skiing on two linked mountains in winter, and in summer the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, alpine hiking and a walkable village. Leave early and stop often.
