Ancient capitals, train-track markets, a jungle green lung and the bridge on the River Kwai — seven escapes that show what lies beyond the city's edge.

Bangkok's sprawl eventually gives way to ruined capitals, floating markets and genuine jungle — much of it reachable in a morning. Here are the day trips that repay the early start, ranked.

Key facts

  • Getting out: trains and minivans are cheap; private drivers and organised tours save time on combined routes.
  • Start early: markets peak in the morning and the heat builds fast.
  • Dress code: temple ruins are still sacred ground — cover shoulders and knees.

1. Ayutthaya

The former Siamese capital, sacked in 1767 and now a UNESCO-listed plain of brick prangs and serene Buddhas, sits about 80 km north. The Buddha head entwined in tree roots at Wat Mahathat is the icon; Wat Chaiwatthanaram at golden hour is the masterpiece. Go by train or minivan, then hire a bicycle or tuk-tuk between the ruins.

2. Maeklong Railway Market and Amphawa

Two classics, one direction. At Maeklong, vendors calmly fold their awnings back as a train rolls directly through the market — one of Thailand's great pieces of daily theatre. Nearby Amphawa's canalside market comes alive toward the weekend afternoons, with boats grilling seafood below the walkways; evening firefly boat tours are a beloved add-on.

3. Kanchanaburi

History with weight: the bridge on the River Kwai, the immaculate Allied war cemeteries and the moving museums of the Death Railway. Further upcountry, the Erawan National Park waterfalls tumble through seven emerald tiers. It is a long day — around two to three hours each way — best done with an early start or an overnight.

4. Bang Krachao

Bangkok's "green lung" sits in a loop of the Chao Phraya, minutes from downtown by longtail crossing. Rent a bicycle and glide along raised concrete paths through jungle and plantations, stopping at the weekend floating market at Bang Nam Phueng. The easiest escape on this list.

5. Damnoen Saduak

The most photographed floating market in Thailand is unashamedly touristy, yet the spectacle of paddle-borne commerce — boats heaped with mangoes, noodle soup ladled gunwale to gunwale — still earns its fame. Arrive as early as you can manage.

6. Ko Kret

A car-free island in the Chao Phraya north of the city, home to a Mon community known for its pottery. Rent a bike, circle the island's stupas and kilns, and snack your way through the weekend market. Gentle, local and low-effort.

7. Khao Yai National Park

Thailand's oldest national park is a stretch for a single day — roughly two and a half to three hours out — but rewards with waterfalls, hornbills and, with luck, wild elephants. Better with a guide, best with a night in the surrounding wine-and-ranch country.

Tip: Combine Maeklong and Damnoen Saduak in one morning loop — most tours do — and check the train times through Maeklong in advance; the market's famous moment only happens when the train does.
